Massage in 2017
Why not use massage as a means of taking time in order to look after yourself, & thereby others, better in 2017?
If you would like to start afresh in 2017 then why not make massage a part of your routine? I increasingly see clients for stress, anxiety or insomnia. This can occur for any number of reasons – work pressures & long hours, hectic home life, feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities & often caring for others – children, the elderly or the sick. Sometimes clients say that they would like to cope better but don’t seem to have the time or the energy. I know from personal experience that it is easy to neglect yourself – therapists seldom take the time for treatments themselves. It was my wise partner who pointed out that I couldn’t look after anyone effectively if I wasn’t in good shape myself. Massage can be highly effective at reducing stress levels with increasing amounts of current research to back this up:
“Two different Swedish massage protocols both resulted in significant decreases in markers of anxiety among a group of healthy women, according to recent research. Massage therapy caused a decrease in systolic [blood pressure], pulse and respiratory rate,” stated the study’s authors. “It can be concluded that massage therapy was useful for decreasing the vital signs associated with anxiety in healthy women”
(‘Comparing the effects of two Swedish massage techniques on the vital signs and anxiety of healthy women’ by Farzaneh Gholami-Motlagh, Mina Jouzi & Bahram Soleymani)

It’s not always easy to make time for ourselves & many see massage as a luxury to be indulged in on holiday. However, my clients often give me the feedback that they were glad that they took just an hour for themselves:
to relax, be mindful, sleep or simply switch off – that they have a reduction in aches & pains & increased range of movement is an added bonus!

New Year, New Routine
Like many, 2017 may see you having a dry January, starting a gym membership or a new healthy lifestyle. I always tell my clients that proper stretching (preferably with 2 minute holds) is essential to help with any DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), improve the circulation & to keep full flexibility as much as possible.
I have several clients who are personal trainers & athletes who book in for post-triathalon & run massage treatments as an effective means of post-exercise stretching
Combining your cardio workout or resistance training with activities such as Yoga or Pilates is ideal. However, if you don’t have the time or inclination for this, or simply want to boost our own stretching then you can use massage as an effective means of pre or post-workout stretching & an important part of any exercise routine.
